In the past, a Viewer could stream arbitrary large documents for viewing optimization using standard PDF linearization , but we have extended this concept to support fast viewing of complex pages which are slow to render as well.

DocPub is a command-line utility which provides an alternative way of generating viewer optimized PDF files. By default, the Viewer is able to recognize a PDF that is Viewer optimized and will utilize this enhancement.

Thus, compared to painting raster images, which already have pixel values defined, the rendering process takes longer, especially on machines with a small CPU and RAM. Other documents might not have any of the above complexities; instead, they may simply contain too much data due to the presence of high resolution images or multiple embedded fonts. Two methods can help you compensate for slowness -- linearization and flattening. Most PDFs generated today are not linearized. The information about this linearized structure then becomes available at the beginning of the file, making it possible for the viewer to determine what chunks of information to fetch and render first, without needing to wait for a large, complex PDF to fully download.

Optimize Page Content. Fast Web View restructures a PDF document for page-at-a-time downloading byte-serving from web servers. This option is especially important with large documents that can take a long time to download from a server. Check with your webmaster to make sure that the web server software you use supports page-at-a-time downloading. In the Preferences dialog box under Categories , select Documents.
