Norton command line scan
There were times when just clicking on "files" in run a custom scan would lock up my system and I haven't even clicked on a file yet! Running a NIS scan has been the only time my system has locked up in months.
I built a rock solid solid system. But now I believe my system isn't completely protected anymore because if a virus or other malware gets into on of these excluded directores it is safe from detection! Sorry about the grammer in the previous post. But everytime I clicked "submit" I'd get "page is temporarily unavailable error" and of course I'd loose everything I just typed. This happenned about 10 times so I thought Symantec servers were down. But then when I tried to open my home page the same thing would happen.
If I openned IExplorer from my desk top it would open but if I tried to go to another link from that page I'd get the same error. Even clicking on refresh produced the error.
I signed off logged my user account then logged back in as an administrator, openned Iexplorer logged on to the forum replied to your message for the 11th time! NIS only asks for input from "administrator accounts". It did this even though I created a firewall rule for iexlorer to "always allow" because it had done this previously when 1st installed the same EXACT thing happenned with Outlook Express.
I couldn't get my email for days until I figured out what NIS was doing. PMJI in the middle of a complex situation but I just happen to have been dealing with something that might relate and be useful. I wonder if it would be worth checking to see what would happen when in one of the limited user accounts you invoked Run as Administrator for iexplore.
Forgive me if this does not relate but I've just been dealing with the Compatibility Wizard in VISTA and it's interesting since it tells you a bit more about what you are doing than the Compatibility Tab in a file's Properties does. Have I weakened my protection by allowing Iexplorer to always communicate to or from any computer any port?
Why are there only 2 choices always allow or Block this instance how come allow this instance only appears if the window keeps reappearing 3 times in quick succession? How come NIS doesn't listen to its' own firewall rules? Today Monday when I tried to send email from my Limited User Account Outlook Express repeatedly created an error message "unable to find host" I opened Iexplorer surfed for awhile and tried again to send email from Outlook Express this time it worked. Outbound TCP connection.
Remote address, service is mail. It never came. One techsupport person told me to call the "Symantec Internet Department". Although you might not be scanning these excluded locations, you can still expect to be protected if you have the Auto-Protect feature turned on. Do you have this feature enabled it is enabled by default? On the other issue with blocked applications, my first question would be on how your NIS Firewall is configured.
Do you have it configured to "Automatically decide what to do [recommended]" or "Ask me what to do"? Do you have any of the advanced options - "program launch monitoring" and "program component monitoring" turned on and configured? The behavior for guest accounts is actually correct. Guest accounts are not allowed to create firewall rules. This is for security reasons. This means:. As Sunny mentioned above, if the application binary has changed very possible through Windows Update , then the application rule is "out of date".
When you launch iexplore. Unfortunately, if you do a lot of work in your Guest user account, then this behavior will occur everytime the iexplore. Each time this occurs, you have these options:. Any of the above actions should automatically update the rule matching the latest iexplore. You should now be able to log back into your Guest account and use IE. I also noticed you are receiving "Program Component Monitoring" prompts, the ones with only two options "Allow Always" and "Block Instance".
This is an advanced feature which only allows two options and I would not recommend having it enabled for normal use. Back to top. Reg: May This forum thread needs a solution. Kudos 0. Winxp SP3. Thanks, mtandy. Certain malware applications consume valuable resources that critical services and applications need to operate.
Worms, for example, can cause a spike in central processing unit and RAM usage, slowing your computer to a crawl. Rather than perform a virus scan in Norton AntiVirus, which requires significant available resources partly because of its graphical user interface, run a Quick Scan or Full System Scan from the command prompt using the Nav You can also initiate the scan in CMD if you are running resource-intensive software and don't want Norton AntiVirus to interfere or cause decreased PC performance.
Press "Windows-E" to open File Explorer. Select the address bar and then press "Ctrl-C" to copy the folder path to the clipboard. Press "Windows-R" to open Run.
Type "cmd" without the quotes here and throughout into the input field and click "OK" to launch Command Prompt. Type "cd " and right-click inside the console.
